Layers of Surface was made during the ‘Every Me’ Art Residency in Adana, organised by Mustafa Boğa. This piece takes inspiration from the Turkish technique of marbling called Ebru or ‘cloud art’. Marbling is achieved by adding oil based inks onto the surface of water, manipulating the repellent nature of the solutions into patterns, that can then be transferred onto an absorbent surface, most commonly paper. In this work bleach was my ‘ink’, oil the water, and local patterned fabric the absorbent surface. The action of the bleach onto coloured fabric has the opposite effect of traditional Ebru, removing rather than adding colour.
